Your hut is a blank canvas and can be whatever you want it to be – from a potting shed to a Gin Palace, a Gamekeeper’s Hut to an extra bedroom – either for your own use or to let out. We will work with you to create the space that’s right for you – from choosing the chassis type and size, to the number and location of your door(s) and window(s) and right down to the paint colours and fittings.

When thinking of the design of your hut, the first decision you need to make is the size and type of chassis. Do you want it to sit on a rolling or turntable chassis? This decision will be based around a number of factors, including the eventual location of your hut, which may impose a height restriction; whether you will want to move your hut on a regular basis and the aesthetic appearance of your hut, which is very much a personal choice. We will never dictate anything regarding the design of your hut, although we will encourage you to consider the proportionality of your hut when it comes to choosing the size of wheels.

The differences are explained below.

The Heritage Hut – Explained.

Heritage hut
Heritage hut

Our Heritage hut is built on a rolling chassis. This means all 4 wheels are fixed to the chassis on straight axles and therefore in order to manoeuvre it into position we use a trolley jack to lift the hut up off its front wheels. By simply attaching a draw bar to the chassis it can then be moved into its final position, with a 4 x 4 vehicle or tractor.

Technical Specification

  • Rolling Chassis, using 4no. 20”, 24”, 32” or 40” wheels, depending on the size of the hut
  • Doors and windows can be chosen from the selection on our Self Build page, or we can make them to bespoke sizes. Their location is entirely your choice.
  • The exterior is clad in galvanised corrugated iron sheets.
  • Usually the interior has tongue and groove (individual lengths NOT mdf “v” board!) either floor to ceiling, or up to half wall height with smooth boards above. Again – the choice is yours.
  • Fully insulated to floor, walls and ceiling, using Earthwool (made from recycled glass).
  • Fitted with a high quality laminate floor, reclaimed boards, engineered or solid oak or other flooring of your choice.
  • All external and internal colour choices are yours. This is a bespoke hut, after all!

The Drover’s Hut – Explained.

Drovers hut
Drovers hut

Our Drover’s Hut is built on a turntable chassis. This means that the back wheels are larger and on straight axles, but the front wheels are smaller and are joined to a turntable which moves underneath the chassis. So, if you want to be able to move your hut between “on site” locations, we would suggest you choose this option.

Technical Specification

  • Turntable Chassis, using a combination of 20”, 24”, 32” or 40” wheels, depending on the size of the hut
  • Doors and windows can be chosen from the selection on our Self Build page, or we can make them to bespoke sizes. Their location is entirely your choice.

Build Quality and technical information

Family of cast iron wheels

Our “family” of cast iron wheels (4 sizes available) are cast from our own patterns in 2 family run foundries in the Midlands (see picture).

Our rolling and turntable chassis’ are made by our local, father and son, blacksmith in the neighbouring village of Crick and are of a heavy duty construction using the finest steel!

Solid wood shelves
Hobbit stove

We use planed all round CLS (Canadian Lumber Standard) timber to make the frame of the hut, which is clad in exterior ply, a breathable membrane and then corrugated iron – painted to the colour of your choice.

The interior skin consists of a vapour barrier and then tongue and groove pine, through the length of the ceiling and to either half or full wall height.

All our huts are fully insulated using either Earthwool (standard) or sheep’s wool insulation (optional extra).

Our doors and windows are all made locally and specifically for our shepherd’s huts, using ONLY hardwood – either Sapele, Idigbo or Oak (unfortunately Oak is at extra cost) – for durability and strength.

Built in fridge

Our beautiful curved roof beams are carved from solid tulip wood (Canadian Poplar) and with a smooth and attractive finish, really give your hut that “WOW” factor!

The old style fittings used on the doors and windows help retain that “old world” charm, whilst providing strength, security and peace of mind.

If you choose to have a stove we will always install heat deflectors, in the form of Vermiculite Boards, on the walls and use a fully compliant flue kit. We also include under floor ventilation, as standard.

Comando fitting
Consumer unit

For electrical connections into your hut, we use a simple “commando” fitting and power is distributed via a fused consumer unit (see pictures). The second fix is always undertaken by a qualified electrician so that your hut is delivered with a full Electrical Compliance Certificate.

Because our Shepherd Huts are made to such a high standard we are able to offer a 10 year Guarantee for the chassis, wheels and external structure. Terms and Conditions apply – click here.
